The Cave of the Patriarchs, or the Tomb of Machpelah, is one of the most significant and sacred sites in Israel, revered by Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike.
This monumental structure, built during the Second Temple period, is the largest intact Jewish monument on earth and has been in continuous use for thousands of years.
Its massive stones, expertly cut and placed without cement, have stood the test of time, symbolizing the enduring strength of the Jewish faith.

For centuries, Jews were forbidden from entering the compound by the Mamelukes, forced to pray on a set of seven steps outside the Eastern Wall—a painful reminder of their exclusion.
These steps, removed in 1967, mark the end of that humiliation, symbolizing a return to the sacred site where their ancestors rest.

The heart of this ancient edifice is the mysterious double cave beneath it, discovered only in 1981 by a group of local Jews.
The cave, known as Machpelah, meaning “double,” is believed to be the burial place of the patriarchs and matriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, and Leah.

The upper walls of the structure feature a unique architectural style known as ‘cornrows,’ with alternating pillars and sunken strips.
This design mirrors the appearance of the walls that once stood above the Temple Mount in Jerusalem before its destruction by the Romans.
